Educating Intangible Cultural Heritage in a Museum: Navajo Weaving Workshop

Navajo Weaving Workshops were offered in 2012 and 2013 at the Museum of Texas Tech University and presented by two master Navajo weavers. The workshops were designed to allow direct communication between the visitors and the Navajo culture-bearers and to promote understanding of the traditional cultural expression beyond addressing material culture aspects. The workshops provided exceptional opportunities for contemplating important issues in the new museological approach as well as heritage discourses. The purpose of this research is to introduce these workshops as examples of a quality education program for intangible cultural heritage in concurrent social and cultural frameworks, and to encourage the incorporation of intangible cultural heritage in museum setting.
